Do I need to increase my KH to counteract the softening properties of Aquasoil?Updated a month ago
No. Softer (low KH) water is a more desirable environment for the majority of plants and animals. The microbial mix of acidic environments will favour microbes that function well in such environments, with archaea rather than bacteria dominating the role of ammonia oxidation. Many natural rivers in the Amazon have low pH ranges between 3 and 5 due to the low carbonate hardness of these water sources.
If you are keeping animals that require alkaline water, such as African Rift Lake cichlids, aquasoil should not be used as a base substrate.
Most of the tanks in the 2Hr gallery operate in the pH 5+ range, with KH <1dKH.
