Do I need to vacuum my substrate ?Updated a month ago
Removing surface detritus is helpful, as excess organic matter triggers algae growth. For those who want a sparkling tank, it is good practice to lightly siphon the surface of the substrate during water changes. This should be done without disturbing the deeper layers of the substrate.

Doesn't organic detritus contribute to the nutrients in the substrate?
Yes, detritus does decompose into nutrients over time. However, organic detritus is a significant algae trigger and the amount of nutrients it contributes is not as impactful as using a rich substrate or using root tabs. So the trade-offs are heavily weighted towards the downside. High levels of organic waste in the substrate also interfere with root formation for delicate plants. Ironically, for many finicky species, a clean substrate will give the best growth.
