How long does the aquasoil last? Does it need to be changed after some time?Updated a month ago
APT FEAST is designed to last for years. It does not need to be replaced. The grains break down very slowly and the nutrients in the grains are used up over a long period of time.
However, Aquasoil must be maintained over the long term to maximise its effectiveness. Two main actions are required:
1. Removal of organic detritus build-up. Organic detritus will build up in the substrate over time and excessive amounts will interfere with the root formation of delicate plants and can also lead to algae problems. Aquarists should regularly siphon off detritus from the surface of the substrate during weekly water changes.
A deep clean every 6-8 months is also recommended. This involves stirring up and vacuuming organic detritus and dust from deeper layers that are usually left untouched by weekly cleaning. This is usually done when plants are uprooted for pruning and replanting.
2. Enriching the aquasoil. While APT Feast contains enough nutrients to last a long time, nutrients are depleted over time. For aquarists looking for optimum growth, enriching the aquasoil after 8 months to a year may be helpful. Enrichment can be achieved by adding ammoniacal nitrogen based root tabs or by mixing a portion of fresh Aquasoil with older soil. Approximately 1 cup (250ml) of fresh Aquasoil per 1 foot square of substrate is sufficient to see an effect.
