We recommend APT 1 for the first 1-2 months. Then, as plant mass increases, switch to APT 3 if your fish load is low or moderate. Continue with APT 1 if your fishload is high (if NO3 measures above 5ppm on average). 

You can also start with APT 3 straight away if you are confident about your tank maintenance approach. Starting with APT 3 gives the fastest results when all other parameters are calibrated well, however, using APT 3 rather than 1 increases the chance of algae issues if tank maintenance is sub optimal.
